Over 7,000 participants, including Heads of State and government, international organizations’ representatives and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), gathered in Istanbul, Turkey, to attend the Fourth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC IV) from 9-13 May 2011. The Conference aimed to assess the results of the 10-year Brussels Action Plan for the LDCs, which was adopted in 2001, and to agree on new measures and strategies for the sustainable development of LDCs into the next decade. The Conference adopted the Istanbul Declaration and the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA), which will provide guidance on LDC-related activities of the UN System for the coming 10 years.

Participation of  the IOLDCs

Mr. Saeed Mokbil and Ms. Alissa Ghils represented the International Organization for the Least Developed Countries. IOLDCs has participated actively and had the opportunity to strongly emphasize on the need to eliminate the constrains and obstacles caused by the chronic conflict situations in the crisis-affected LDCs or in between, which severely affects the sustainable development in these countries and called upon the international community and all the stakeholders concerned to work together with the civil society in order to provide adequate effort in conflict-prevention and post-conflict peace-building. This would pave the way for peace, stability and sustainable development in LDCs.
